Clematis - An Introduction

Queen of climbers is a very apt description of this truly versatile climbing plant. Most people, when they think of a clematis plant, conjure up pictures of the popular mauve pink Nelly Moser, or the deep purple Jackmanii Superba but the range of types, colours and uses of clematis plants is very wide indeed. For example, there are the winter flowering, evergreen clematis, which provide interest from November to February; the dainty, nodding flowers of the Alpine and Macropetala varieties herald spring in March and April; the vigorous Montana varieties can clothe and disguise the ugliest aspects of the garden, blooming with thousands of small blossom flowers, to delight the eye.

The varieties of spring and summer flowering clematis, with their large eye-catching flowers are too numerous to mention, but the Viticella varieties bring added dimension to the garden, with their abundant, smaller-sized flowers, as do the Texensis species, with their unusual tulip, or bell-shaped flowers. Tangutica and Oreintalis species provide colour in the garden from summer to late autumn, and there are a few heavily scented varieties to give an added dimension to your garden.

There are also herbaceous varieties. Some are useful for ground cover, others grow to a height of two feet. Clematis are therefore not only to be grown against walls and fences. They can also be grown in tubs and containers for patios and balconies; in rockeries; over low shrubs; along the ground; through trees; over pergolas, and over any unsightly features in the garden.

IN FACT, THERE IS AMPLE REASON TO HAVE AT LEAST HALF A DOZEN OF THESE WONDERFUL AND VERSATILE PLANTS IN YOUR GARDEN, AND WE WILL BE MORE THAN HAPPY TO SUPPLY THEM TO YOU!
